Spooky Darlings from Wendy's Quilts and More

It may be Thanksgiving where you live, but I've just finished my Halloween quilt!  I've called it "Spooky Darlings" after the fabric range that I used.

The design is very simple 60 degree triangles, but what makes it special is all the hand quilted spider webs and the quirky fabrics.  I used a stencil to mark the spider webs and hand quilted in three different shades of grey Aurifil 12wt.

I only had a fat eighth bundle to play with so I made the biggest triangles that I could and combined them in alternating dark and light rows ...

Halloween 2023 from Wendy's Quilts and More

Well, it's that time of the year again.  Halloween is still viewed as an American tradition in this part of the world, but more and more people are getting in to trick or treating each year.

My Spooky Darlings quilt won't be finished for this Halloween, but it is progressing well.

I live on a street that is well known for Halloween because it's wide and straight and a safe place for kids to trick or treat.  It's Spring in the southern hemisphere and it doesn't get dark here until after 8pm at the moment ...

Halloween Quilt Finish from Podunk Pretties

She finished, washed and ready to ship to my daughter.  It took a bit longer than expected but there's still plenty of time for them to enjoy the quilt before Halloween.

I love how it looks like I took the time to do some fussy cutting on some of the fabrics, like in the cornerstones.  It was just pure luck.

This quilt is for cuddling and warmth so the quilting was kept to the bare minimum.  A simple stitch in the ditch around the stars, blocks and borders.  Free motion in the star blocks.

For the final border a ...

Almost a Quilt Top from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilty Friends!  This week has flown by faster than a witch on Halloween.  My plan was to have this quilt finished and shipped by today.

Yesterday evening I managed to piece the bottom two rows together before calling it a day.  As I stood back and looked at the layout before putting them together I realized I really didn't care for the sashing or cornerstones.  Word of warning...striped sashing is hard on the eyes and makes me a little dizzy.

I think the cornerstones would have looked better had I used the colorful prints instead of the ...

Another Halloween Quilt From Scraps from Podunk Pretties

Hey Quilty Friends!  What do quilters do when they don't want to store or save scrap fabrics?  The answer is simple, make another quilt from the scraps.  In order to make another quilt from the Halloween prints I needed to pull more Halloween-ish fabrics for the borders and binding.

I can see how this could become a scrap quilt rabbit hole because there will be more scraps produced from the fabrics I pulled for the borders and binding in the picture above.  On my cutting table is a basket of white background fabric scraps, they will be worked it ...

Three Quick Halloween Quilts Finished from Podunk Pretties

These simple Halloween quilts are sure to make the grandkids happy.  Ages 10, 7 and 4.  They love the holidays, what kid doesn't?  Especially the ones where candy is the main dish.

For some crazy reason I've been collecting Halloween prints for over a year.  It all started with a Halloween fabric clearance sale.  Not too much you can do with a handful of FQ's.  So what's a gal to do but buy more when you can find them cheap.

Each quilt has the same prints but not in the same amount or order.

Each quilt ...

Halloween Quilt Binding from Podunk Pretties

Hi Quilty Friends!  Today's plan: Machine bind 3 quilts.

All three quilts will be bound with the same black striped fabric so I pieced all the binding needed for the three quilts in one long strip.

I've tried every trick or tool out there to help keep the binding off the floor.  But it just seems to go quicker and smoother with the original way of just tossing it on floor between my legs.  Most quilters will press the binding in half on the long edge.  Not me, I fold as I go.  For me it's quicker ...

It's A Little Spooky from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilty Friends!  Things are getting a little scary out here in Podunk.  Over the last year my quilting world has been turned upside down by breaking all my self imposed quilting rules.

As many of you know I don't typically like novelty fabrics.  And most certainly do not like orange or black.

But I've been collecting Halloween prints.  For some reason I'm being drawn to darker colors and not just Halloween prints.  These are just some of them I've collected and using in my current project.

And would you look at the purple prints.  I ...

Trick-Or-Treaters from Mama Spark's World

I have finished binding my pattern test quilt from Meags and Me.It's called Trick-or-TreatersI just love these little Trick-or-Treaters.I used fabric from the Art Gallery line, Spooky and Sweeter for the upper and lower part.I used a Grunge for the applique background.I had to piece the upper and lower part because the pattern was wider than the fabric. If you look closely you can see where I

Friday Finish: Scaredy Cat Quilt from Patchwork Sampler Blog

I worked on this right up until Monday, but was determined to finish it by Halloween–Halloween 2022! This quilt is from the Scaredy Cat quilt pattern by Jedi Craft Girl. I made the blocks last fall, but once Halloween was over it became a UFO and languished for about a year. The fabric is Moda’s Kitty Corn line by Urban Chiks and it is perfect for this quilt. I love the soft colors. They are not the screaming orange, green, and black you typically see for Halloween. The background is a coordinating Moda Grunge.

Here is a picture ...

Ghastlies Table Runner - another Ghastlie finish from Crayon Box Quilt Studio

My second Ghastlie finish to share has also been a long waiting UFO. I created these blocks for the Wicked Blog Hop in October 2012.

Since I'm trying to focus on getting projects actually finished, this one wasn't hard to get to the completed top stage and then it was added to the pile to get quilted.  I turned the blocks into a table runner for my long dining room table but it could just as easily become a skinny wall hanging if I so choose at some point.

The Ghastlie Gals Wall Hanging - a Ghastlie finish from Crayon Box Quilt Studio

Today being All Hallow's Eve, it's the perfect time to share a recent finish.Way back....say 10 years ago this month, I hosted a couple of Halloween themed round robin type events though this particular one was back and forth between me and one other quilter, hence I called it a See Saw Swap.

My swap partner, Edy, didn't have a blog then and unfortunately I've lost contact with her in the years since but I'm still thankful to her for the fabulous additions she made to my quilt.

I started out with one ...

Boo Crew Mystery QAL from Baby Boomer Quilting Bee

The Fat Quarter Shop hosted the 2022 Boo Crew Mystery that has to be the cutest ever.  The one I finished above went to my second sister for her birthday, however I see another one in my future.

I used a bright green background so the purples, golds and greens popped for a Mardi Gras-ish Halloween party.  The eyes of the cat are a little dizzying because I used polka dot fabric and didn't line them up.  Oh well, he is the cutest of all the blocks.

Bats and Boos QAL from Baby Boomer Quilting Bee

Although I would like to skip some memories of 2021, there are many quilt finishes worth sharing.  The Fat Quarter Shop hosted a Bats and Boos QAL, which I happily joined.   I have become a huge fan of a few You Tube Videos after retirement, including Kimberly Jolly Fat Quarter Shop.

A little over a year ago, the southern part of Louisiana became the target of Hurricane Ida.  We evacuated for several days along with this quilt  to finish the binding.  Returning home to no power or water, we counted our blessings to still have a home.

The finished Bats ...

September from Wendy's Quilts and More

I've made it through winter and we're officially in Spring now.  My work conference is over for another year and I finally have some headspace to think about quilting again.

The US Open tennis started earlier this week and I've been enjoying watching that on TV.  The timings work really well for someone with a flexible part time job like me.  The night session starts at 7pm in New York, but that is 11am here in New Zealand.  I try to do my work in the mornings and then watch a lot of the night session during ...

Cozy Finish with Fleece from Needle and Foot

This quilt is a first for me. I have never backed a quilt with fleece. As I was making this little Halloween quilt, it seemed like a fun thing to try. I was hoping for a soft, cuddly quilt and wow – backing it with fleece did the trick. Early in the summer, I browsed an estate sale of a quilter. I restrained myself and bought only some Halloween fabric plus a few books. The fabric was from an older line designed by Debbie Mumm.

Using fleece made the quilt feel substantial enough that I decided not to put batting between ...

Spooky Darlings from Wendy's Quilts and More

Well, last weekend didn't go according to plan and I didn't make it to Christchurch after all.  I was caught up in Air New Zealand's worst weekend of 2022.  It was the start of the school holidays, the All Blacks were playing Ireland in Dunedin (so a lot of people were travelling), the weather was awful in parts of NZ, and the second wave of COVID-19 is affecting airline staffing levels.

My Friday morning flight was cancelled, and then my Saturday afternoon flight was cancelled too!   The next available flight down was on Tuesday.  So, I had ...

2021: Week 47 of 15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

2021:  Week 47 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

It's been busy at work while we gear up to meet with the customers. I am hosting the Thanksgiving gathering this year, so I have been spending time getting ready for them. This means that there hasn't been a lot of sewing, but I did have all those loose pieces I needed to press for the October house mini quilt. I decided that it would be better for me to go ahead and lay them out and press them down instead of leaving all these little fused pieces all loose ...
